This day is usually about picnics with family and friends. But for me I have decided not to go to any picnics. In fact, I do not believe this year’s 4th of July is a happy occasion. I’m increasingly disturb by what our government is doing to our country. I think the death of Michael Jackson is an excuse for people not to open their eyes and see what’s going on in Washington, D.C.. Our country has gone so far away from our founding principles, I think it will take a horrific event to get people to realize what is going on.
The Declaration of Independence was signed on this day. This document gave moral and philosophical reasons why the colonies should separate from the British Empire. Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States understood that government should not interfere with the rights of the individual. The sentence: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” is very crucial. This was a moral sanction for individual rights. No other nation in the world considered the individual as having any real meaning. In Europe, in the 18th century as well as today, individuals were viewed as serfs to be beholden to a king, queen or tribe. This is what is termed collectivism, where the group has primacy over the individual. Unfortunately, our country has embraced many forms of collectivism which is choking us morally and intellectually.
So instead of eating ribs and grilled hamburgers, lets reflect on what it takes to sustain our nation’s founding principles, before they are forever lost.
