I’ve just read some sad news. A favorite show of mine from childhood, Reading Rainbow has ended. Words cannot describe how I enjoyed this show growing up. I can’t believe it was on for 26 years. From reading the article, the reason for ending was financial but also philosophical. The purpose of the show was to show the joys of leisure reading. It shouldn’t be about the mechanics of reading. Not that I am against the phonics and spelling. That is extremely important and the only way to teach reading effectively. However, in today’s society reading for pleasure is no longer done. The importance of Reading Rainbow was to show that reading for one’s own sake is important for improving literacy. This is quite sad indeed.
