Two weeks have passed since the earthquake in Haiti. It’s good that nations all over the world are helping with the rescue effort. However, it is painfully obvious that Haiti has no infrastructure that would be able to withstand a natural catastrophe. This is ultimately a consequence of corrupt government and more specifically, foreign aid. This is a man-made disaster, point blank. How can $1 billion dollars of aid go to a country; and there is nothing to show for it? I want to direct your attention to a book that explains the only social system that could have saved Haiti from being exposed to natural disasters.
Ayn Rand’s Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal is series of essays which gives a philosophical defense for the free market system. When I first read this book, I didn’t have a firm understanding of capitalism. In fact I was not able to give a definition. But after reading this book, its clear to me that this social system is the only system that can ensure freedom for the individual and its corollary, a prosperous society.
If anything, the earthquake symbolizes the consequences of foreign aid. No amount of George Clooney tele-a-thons will change that fact. Haitians do not need money thrown at them. They need to be encouraged to get their own society in order. And not continue to be charity cases for the United Nations!
