Stepping out of Russian fiction, I can’t help but think that Dostoevsky set a tone that would foreshadow 20th century Russia. I do not mean that the author would ever believe that a crude, false doctrine such as Marxism/Communism would take root in Russia. But Russian culture, as shown in Dostoevsky’s novel laid the ground work for the most the destructive, most depraved regime ever. (Yes, this beats out Nazi Germany. Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany are from the same totalitarian coin, but Communism lasted longer and encompassed 4 continents and Central America). A fiction writer always presents a world in which he finds important. From what I read about Dostoevsky was that he was a devout Orthodox Christian. He was also imprisoned for a time due to subversion.
I wanted to direct your attention to two books about the Soviet Union. The first, called The Whisperers: Private Life in Stalin’s Russia. Written by Orlando Figes, this is probably one of the few books that looks into the lives of ordinary citizens caught up in a dictatorship. Some of these individuals are still alive, they give details of life in the first socialist country. From communal apartment living to the constant propaganda extolling a future utopia; reality was made for them by the madness of a dictator. Stalin’s tenacles spread to every citizen in the country.
What kind of society resulted in the Soviet Union? A woman named Antonina Golovina told Mr. Figes about being kicked off their land and categorized as a kulak as a child”
‘You must not judge anything, or you will be arrested,’ she always said. We would stand all night in a queue for bread, and she would say to us, ‘You must not judge! It’s none of your business if the government doesnt’ have bread.’ Mama told us it was a sin to pass judgment. ‘Hold your tongue!’ she would always say when we left the house. (Bold added)
This kind of mentality spread throughout society. During Stalin’s murder spree called the Great Terror, people concealed their true beliefs. A split personality was necessary for survival. Quoting a diary entry from a man named Arkadii Mankov, he states:
It is pointless to talk about the public mood. There is silence, as if nothing has happened. People talk only in secret, behind the scenes and privately. The only people who express their views in public are the drunks. (Bold added)
This madness had a terrible effect on a country. The need to pretend all the time, even if an individual was directly affected by this dictator’s policy of murder and slavery breeds a kind of passivity about ones own life. A woman named Angelina Bushueva, whose parents were arrested during the Great Terror tells how her mother never talked about her life in the Gulag. Her father had been shot. Angelina’s mother never discussed politics. Stating:
…..The fear she had brought back from the camps led her to adopt a position of ‘uncritical acceptance’ of everything she was told by the Soviet regime. She saw the contradictions between propaganda and reality, she had direct experience of the injustices of the regime, but, like millions of other ordinary Soviet citizens, she ‘never stopped to reflect critically’ on the reality she had observed. Acceptance of Soviet reality was a coping mechanism that helped her survive. (Bold added)
This book touched me so much. It was so unbelievable, I don’t think James Cameron or Steven Spielberg could make this up. I wonder how I would act in this environment? The inhumanity of it all is stunning to me. I challenge anyone who reads this book can honestly say that Stalin wasn’t a socialist. Or he wasn’t following “true” Marxism. This man was a beast who had the backing of state power. It’s the belief that the state can control the minds, bodies and souls of individuals. Ideas have consequences and the wrong ideas can be deadly.
The next book I’m reading is called the KGB Today: The Hidden Hand by John Barron. This book repulsed me. What made me so angry was: 1) The Soviet Union was completely dependent upon the West, particularly the United States for technology and other economic necessities for its survival; 2) the ideological subversion of the West was a success with its use of Active Measures.(Again the power of ideas); 3) The willingness of Westerners to sell out their own countries and their security for a few dollars and an expensive lifestyle.
The KGB’s main goal was to intellectually subvert. The cynicism it inculcated with its own spies was astounding. The author notes how a KGB officer would recruit agents:
In discussing why people become agents, the colonel quoted an American acronym, MICE-Money, Ideology, Compromise, Ego. Usually, he said, one or more of these motivations impel a foreigner to succumb to the KGB; ideally, the case officer should play upon all four.(Bold added)
Wow!! And to think a former colonel of the KGB is now the ruler of Russia. Consider the last 10 years, the murder of journalists, lawyers, businessmen and anyone who criticizes Stalin lite Vladimir Putin. The fact that President Bush called this man a “good man” because he wore a crucifix!! And the behavior of President Obama in constantly placating this man. Even after he tried to invade Georgia Obama decided stop the missile defense program for Czech Republic and Poland. Two countries who were battered and abused by the Germans from the West and Soviet Russia from the East. When will we ever learn? I remember a woman I went to school with who grew up in the Soviet Union. I recall what she said verbatim. “Putin’s a former KGB. What would you expect from him?!!??” I understand it clearly, but does the State Department or the world??
