It’s unfortunate I have to start the new year with a story so absurd, and so tragic, it can only happen in 21st century America. This article reports that a new edition of Huckleberry Finn will be purged of the word nigger. All 219 references. Despite the fact that the book is set in the 19th century South, during slavery, an academic no less named Alan Gribben from Auburn University has decided to reissue the book in censored form. What is this professor’s justification in ruining an American classic? He believes that the book causes hurt feelings!!! Yes, a Mark Twain scholar believes the book causes hurt feelings. Cry me a river!!! Over the years many school districts have banned this book because of parents misguided attempts at protecting their children. Please note many of these parents are black.
What’s so disturbing is that political correctness is so entrenched that literature cannot escape it. At root, knowledge as such is under attack. We now live in a culture that does not value intellectual pursuits. But most importantly, there is a profound disrespect for the minds of children. The educational establishment is attacking the conceptual faculty through its irrational teaching methods. How long can a nation survive this philosophical assault? Is any wonder we have a dumbed down, dull citizenry and culture? This can only lead to the destruction of Western Civilization.
