I just finished reading a provocative book that answers this question. In the book Sex at Dawn authors Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jetha say no. Their thesis is that modern sexuality is modeled after our prehistoric ancestors. As hunter-gatherers, our prehistoric cousins lived in group settings. This included males and females who shared everything, including each other.
While I was reading I was definitely taken aback. The authors uses extensive research of primates to give us a picture of how human sexuality evolved. Bonobos are our closest primate relative. And looking at their behaviors, they are the least violent but most sexual. I remember studying about the Bonobos in an undergraduate anthropology course. I was shocked to see that whenever any hostility came to the forefront, they minimize it by having sex. That’s all it takes—-this behavior does not change even when they are in zoos. Chimpanzees (remember the Connecticut woman who was savagely mauled by her boss’s pet chimp) and gorillas are horrifically violent to each other and to anyone else; the authors point out that majority of anthropological and evolutionary research about prehistoric humans focuses only on chimps and gorillas.
As far as modern humans are concerned, what does this say about modern sexuality? From an anatomical prospective the authors point to research that shows that men who are not sexually active have higher incidences of heart disease, prostate cancer, and abnormal sperm. The authors cite a couple of studies done in Australia. Explaining the correlation between infrequent ejaculations and health problems:
A team of Australian researchers, for example, fount that men who had ejaculated more than five times per week between the ages of twenty and fifty were one-third less likely to develop prostate cancer later in life.
A different team from Sydney University reported in late 2007 that daily ejaculation dramatically reduced DNA damage to men’s sperm cells… After forty-two men with damaged sperm were instructed to ejaculate daily for a week, almost all showed less chromosomal damage than a control group who had abstained for three days.
This is incredible. I never imagined that lack of sexual activity, any sexual activity would cause major health problems for men.
The authors rightly conclude that sexuality has been negatively influenced by religion in America. Particularly in regards with women’s sexuality. But there’s no denying that many practices we don’t seem to have a problem with were developed due to someone’s repressive ideas about sexuality. For instance with women, there was an assumption that we were not only coy and passive, but our only purpose was to satisfy men. Give me a break!! I find that truly insulting. It’s as if women were not taken seriously and not respected to have their own needs considered.
Male circumcision is a procedure that was developed to stop males from masturbating. There is no medical necessity for this surgery. John Harvey Kellogg convinced millions of Americans to mutilate their sons. He also suggested that carbolic acid be pored on little girls clitorises. The authors point out that Kellogg was the leading sex educator in late 19th century America. Not only did he not have sex with wife of four decades. He had a preference for a male orderly giving him daily enemas. And to think people took him seriously. He had serious sexual repression and he put that repression out on to society. It seems to me that Kellogg may have been a closeted homosexual and didn’t have a healthy outlet to express it.
This was a truly fascinating book. I’m still thinking about the implications of it all. I admit we Americans live in a highly sex negative society. On one end, adults and teens want to behave wildly without any concept of moral standards or responsibility. And then on the other end of the spectrum, we have people who have their daughters wear ridiculous abstinence rings, shun and denigrate homosexuality and bisexuality, or assume that families can only encompass heterosexuals.
The only criticism I have about the book is the authors continued promotion of collectivism. They assume that many of our problems stems from the advent of agriculture. They seem to think that living communally is preferable to how we live today. I totally disagree. But in the main, this is a very important book that goes against the establishment. I’m still digesting all the information. I know that how things are in our society is directly related to our lack of understanding between genders and ourselves. There seems to be a willingness to live in dishonesty and disrespect. Is it any wonder that over 50% of marriages in this country end in divorce? Do I believe monogamy is natural? I still do not know.
