I just returned from a fabulous trip to D.C. It has been about 30 years since I last visited. The sites I visited were the Lincoln Memorial, which is magnificent in grandeur. To me it embodied the man who saved the country. I also went to the Library of Congress. I took a tour of the place and got the chance to see an original Gutenberg Bible. What really sealed it for me was Thomas Jefferson’s library which was on full display. Some of the books were originals from his collections. How impressive!! I couldn’t help but wonder, do current congressional members use the library?? I don’t think so.
My final destination was the National Archives. This building houses our founding documents. I was determined to make it to this place in the sweltering heat!!! The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were in a domed room. There was a peacefulness to the place. We all stood in a line patiently waiting to review the documents. There was a quiet respect in the room. It was as if everyone’s noses were pressed to the glass casing to look at these magnificent documents. I would hope you all will get a chance to visit the capital again.
While at the Library of Congress I purchased a book called The Declaration of Independence And Other Great Documents of American History 1775-1865. This was edited by John Grafton. Right now I am reading Patrick Henry’s famous speech.
