A young aristocrat in ancient Rome lives a life of leisure. Casually living his life, and indulging in pleasures while traveling through the countryside of the Roman Empire. His journey leads him to the home of a sorceress and her servant. One night he and the servant fool around. He convinces the servant to use the sorceresses magic to turn him into an elegant eagle. However, that was not to happen. Instead he is turned into a donkey. Thus begins the unusual journey of young Lucius, the ass. The book, The Golden Ass, takes us along the bizarre trip of Lucius. We see this aristocrat being sold as a donkey to bandits who take glee in looting and terrorizing the countryside .
He experiences being sold to a group of transgendered psychic priestess who con individuals out of their hard earned possessions. And we also see him living with a baker’s family whose wife is fooling around behind his back.
These are just some of the tales that Lucius the donkey goes through. I enjoyed this story because it is a tale about the consequences of whim-worship. This story also highlights the nature of capriciousness, and how people live their lives dishonestly. It fully exposes what happens when individuals pursue whims of the moment without any direction in life. There’s no wishy-washiness in this story. In some sections of the book, I laughed out loud. But a message was being shown: 1) that you can’t have your cake and eat it too, and 2)bad behavior leads to bad outcomes.
A side note about the writer. Lucius Apuleius was a North African storyteller. He was educated in Athens and Rome. So his approach to storytelling follows the Hellenic literary style. Whoever said that the past cannot teach us anything about life is a fool. Enjoy!!!
