Via American Thinker, I came across an article about a controversy that occurred earlier this year. A young girl named Jada Williams, a student in the Rochester Public School system, was inspired by an assignment to read Frederick Douglass’ autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, to write an essay indicting the poor quality of her education. Here’s her full essay. The fact that young Jada, a 13 year old, was able to see parallels between Douglass’ experience of his slavemasters insistence that he not learn to read and remain mentally a slave, to that of the apathy and rampant anti-intellectualism that permeates public school life is truly remarkable.
From her essay Jada states the following:
“This type of thinking is somewhat still prevalent in our society today.
Most white teachers that I have come into contact with, over the last several years of my life, has failed to instruct us even today. The teachers are not as vocal about us not learning how it has been described in this narrative; but their actions speaks volumes.
When I myself sit in crowded classrooms and no real concrete instruction is taking place. It makes that saying “history does repeat itself” all the more true.
For white teachers to be able to be in a position of power to dictate what I can, cannot and will learn, only desiring that I may get bored because of the inconsistency and the mis-management of the classroom and remain illiterate and ignorant; or better yet distracted because some children decide to misbehave because they don’t understand, and ashamed to ask for help.
The teacher recognizing all of these things and still not addressing the matter at hand, so much time has been wasted- then the bell rings and on to the next class, same drama different teacher, different class. When do we get off of this roller coaster?
When the white teachers began to pass out pamphlets and packets, they expect us the black students to read the directions, complete it, and hand it in for a grade. The reality of this is that most of my peers cannot read and or comprehend the material that has been provided.”(bold added)
This speaks volumes, not only about Jada’s school, but the entire public school system. Jada clearly recognizes the mediocrity of her teachers and how they are passing it down to the students. Because Jada singled out “white teachers” instead of ALL teachers, her message is being ignored. This issue is not about race but about learning. It should be no surprise to anyone that the American public school system is in shambles. Not only are students doing poorly, the thuggish teachers unions, and politicians who pander to them have made it difficult to enact meaningful change.
However, I believe it is inherent in government schooling to train individuals to be obedient, docile, dumbed-down citizens. A curriculum that shuns critical thinking, subjects that are incoherent and lack structure, and absolutely no discipline are part and parcel of many public schools. Choices are non-existent for parents who don’t have the financial means to homeschool or send their kids to private schools.
You would think Jada would be praised for her honesty and respect for ideas. Unfortunately, because of Jada’s intellectual honesty she has been subjected to harassment and bullying–by teachers! What cowards!! It got so bad for her, her mother had to remove her from her school.
I do not know what Jada’s home life is like. It appears she comes from a family that respects her intellectual pursuits. This whole event gives me hope for the future. Not only that a 13 year old was willing to challenge the educational status quo, she took inspiration from a book of an autobiography of one of America’s greatest oratorical heroes. The value of books, I LOVE IT!!
I would hope that Jada’s family continues to encourage her intellectual independence because she will continually be challenged throughout her life to follow the crowd, and merge herself with the collective. KEEP IT UP JADA!! AND DON’T GIVE UP!!
