Whatever you heard about the financial crisis is false! We’ve all heard the same tired reasons about why the real estate market and financial industry collapsed. The most common meme is that the banking industry was deregulated so therefore deregulation caused the crisis. Former Chairman and CEO of BB&T John Allison has written a book putting the myth to rest. Called The Financial Crisis and the Free Market Cure: Why Pure Capitalism Is the World Economy’s Only Hope, Allison details what really happened before and during the crisis.
As the CEO of major southeastern bank that rode out the crisis, I find Allison to be credible. Allison points out that the banking sector is the most over-regulated, so therefore mis-regulated industry in the country. He points out that government policy caused the crisis and government policy continues to impede recovery. Please note the United States is a mixed economy, not a capitalist economy. It is with our mixed economy that necessarily creates volatility, with government needlessly meddling with further controls.
Allison cites numerous instances of gross misconduct on the part of banking examiners, the FDIC(Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation), SEC, Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, FHA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Congress and the Executive Branch. All these agencies, with their contradictory rules and regulations, created an atmosphere where judgement itself was undermined. Please note that all these alphabet soup agencies did not exist until the early 20th century. Particularly during the Wilson, Hoover and Roosevelt administration was when the separation of economics and state disappeared forever.
On a personal note, I worked in the real estate and banking industries for 8 years. I have first hand knowledge of what happened during this crisis. My focus was on asset-backed securitization, an investment tool that no longer exists. One by one our clients, the Wall Street investment houses were going under or being sold to other firms. For the record, I haven’t worked in the real estate or investment field in 2 years. So I can attest to the ripple effect of bad government policy decimating everything and everyone.
Allison rightly concludes that the fundamental reasons behind this economic mess are philosophical. From Congress and the executive branch using the economy to redistribute wealth and any other political pet projects; all this stems from two schools of philosophic thought that are slowly destroying the country. The first school of thought, pragmatism is American as apple pie. This view eschews principles in the name of expediency. In other words, what works for the short-term is what is important, regardless of the past or future. During the Clinton administration for example, to pay off minority groups, lending standards were severely curtailed. Allison goes into great detail about the so-called racial discrimination in mortgage financing. BB&T got caught up in this modern day witch hunt. It is truly disturbing. Certain businesses also lobbied to have certain laws passed to benefit their organizations at the expense of the overall health of other businesses and industries.
The second school of thought that is undermining the country is altruism. Please keep in mind that altruism does not mean helping those who you are important to you and are worthy of your help. Altruism holds that individuals must sacrifice themselves to those who are less than, or are not worthy of the help. Let’s use the sub-prime mortgage fiasco as an example. The idea behind this oxymoronic policy, which went into full effect during the Bush administration, was every American has a right to live in a house. That living in a house inferred a kind of mystical aura. That one wasn’t living the American dream if one wasn’t “owning” a home.
Keep in mind that sub-prime means an individual whose credit is so poor they could not qualify for a conventional mortgage. This also means that the individual does not have the financial means to put down a measly 2% down payment. All this fuelled the real estate bubble. Now, who are the individuals that were sacrificed in the name of this absurd government policy? For starters, the individuals who had good credit and could put down a reasonable down payment. Unfortunately, the housing prices were so high, many couldn’t afford to purchase a home. And those that did purchase a home, the mortgage is worth more than the house. Another group that suffered were the renters. I was in this category. Renters in some areas of the country had a hard time finding quality apartments because so many were being converted to condominiums. Also, renters are subsidizing mortgagees through tax deductions. Why couldn’t I get a tax deduction for being a renter? It’s as if tax law punishes those who are prudent with their money.
Next is the mortgagee who had no business applying for a sub-prime loan, period. Their ignorance led them to sign for exotic mortgage tools such as interest-only loans, which put them further in a hole. And let’s not forget the basic upkeep of a home. That can incur hundreds of thousands of dollars in itself. And of course property taxes. The financial health of these individuals were ruined due to soical policy.
But most importantly, we the taxpayer have been most harmed. Now we are on the hook, through FHA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for massive amounts of our hard earned money all in the name of altruism.
This book should be on all best sellers lists. Allison systematically refutes all the nonsense espoused from the mainstream media. The majority of whom are so poorly educated, their inability to integrate knowledge of history and economics is truly frightening. But the true goal of the media is not to impart objective information but to promote a leftist agenda and Obama’s disastrous polices. So the falsehoods continue five years later. Read this book for yourself to get the truth!
