Using the thousands of letters and journals, historian David McCullough has written a remarkable biography of John Adams, the intellectual backbone of the new United States of America. Sandwiched between the presidencies of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, it easy to see how Adams came to be forgotten. Adams’s humble beginnings should not cloud your judgment about Adams. A farmer and attorney by trade, Adams was primarily an intellectual who understood the importance of ideas and how they move men and nations. More at ease with books, Adams amassed a collection of 3,200 volumes. Throughout Adams’s political life, he would live in Europe meeting with kings, queens, others within nobility to garner support for the American cause.
The old adage behind a good man is a good woman is definitely true with regards to Adams and his wife Abigail. Not only were they husband and wife, Adams respected Abigail as a friend and professional confidante, always consulting with her about important decisions that would affect the fledgling United States. Not only did Abigail keep the home and farm running for years while Adams was in Europe. Mrs. Adams had to contend with the daily hardships of 18th century living, alone. This included regular outbreaks of smallpox, yellow fever, and other illnesses our modern life has eradicated. All this as well as dealing with problems that many families deal with. Most tragically Adams two sons Charles and Thomas would succumb to alcoholism.
What made me respect Abigail even more was her integrity in the face of serious racial prejudice against one of her farm hands. A free black named James Prince wanted to attend a local apprentice school. She thought it was a good idea a approved. However, her neighbor asked that James withdraw from the school because the other students did not want to go to school with a black man. Here’s what she said about this blatant racism:
The boy is a freeman as much as any of the young men, and merely because his face is black is he to be denied instruction? How is he to be qualified to procure a livelihood? Is this the Christian principle of doing unto others as we would have others to do to us?
After that she heard nothing more about the situation and James continued his education.
What surprised me the most about Adams was his complicated relationship with Thomas Jefferson. At one point, Jefferson misguidedly supported the French Revolution. Jefferson even went so far as to compare it to the American Revolution. It was only Adams who was able to foresee the disaster that would befall France. Adams saw the inherent contradictions of democracy. Surmising that it can only lead to chaos, which it did with mass murder that would be the Reign of Terror. It appears that Jefferson’s animus towards all monarchies seemed to have clouded his judgment.
The relationship would prove more contentious during Adams’s vice-presidency and presidency. I got the sense that Jefferson was a fairweather friend who sabotaged Adams political career. From writing anonymous letters to newspapers accusing Adams of being a monarchist, and of being tainted by his years in Europe. To paying others undercover to smear Adams. Ultimately, an eleven year rift would develop between the two.
It was during Adams presidency that proved to be the most arduous. The day to day tasks of his administration, and following in the footsteps of Washington proved taxing on Adams. I think the biggest reason why Adams lost his re-election was because he was the first and last independent president. Refusing to ally himself with the political parties at that time: the Federalists and Republicans; this was most revealing to me because it shows a serious flaw in our political system that I believe is undermining the country to this day. Writing to a friend years after he lost re-election, Adams rightly concluded that the political scene was a sham and worried about the future of the country. Stating as follows:
My friend! Our country is a masquerade! No party, no man dares to avow his real sentiments. All is disguise, vizard, cloak.”
If he could see, over 2oo years later, he probably wouldn’t be surprised at the SHAM that is the Democratic and Republican parties with their corruption and cowardice. Neither party respects the Constitution nor its foundation of individual rights.
I learned so much about John Adams, I think you would enjoy this biography as much as I do. I have a new found respect John, and Abigail Adams.
