We all know the story of King Henry VIII the tyrannical ruler of England. In his quest for a male heir he divorced and beheaded his wives with impunity. Finally, in 1537, a son named Edward was born. The circumstances surrounding Edward’s birth would have massive implications for the Catholic Church, England, Western Europe, and our own nation’s founding. Upon Henry VIII death, his son, who at age 9 would be the new king Edward VI, took the realm during its most turbulent time. Overshadowed by his older sister Elizabeth I forty-four year rule, Edward had become a kind of footnote to British history.
After watching a documentary on YouTube about Edward VI, my interest was piqued. I came across a fascinating biography by British historian Chris Skidmore. Titled Edward VI: The Lost King of England
Skidmore gives the reader an interesting look at the short reign of Edward VI. Even though Edward died at age fifteen, his reign proved pivotal into transitioning England into a protestant nation.
As young as Edward was, he was unusually gifted. Even though he had protectors vying for as much control over him, Edward had considerable influence in ushering in the Reformation. Continuing what his father started, Edward’s goal was to maintain the rule of royal supremacy. This entailed being head of the Church of England. Many of the rituals that are still in practice among protestant denominations began under Edward VI. The removal of all references to Catholicism was crucial. That meant the destruction of all things Catholic. Altars and images were removed to make way for communion tables. Even the role of the priest went through a radical transformation. They would now only focus on preaching the Word of God and administer the holy sacrament.
All Catholic ceremonies such as baptisms, confirmations and burial services were completely rewritten. Even the concept of transubstantiation (bread and wine transformed into the body and blood of Christ) was removed. Communion would be about remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice. The Virgin Mary, saints, and prophets were permanently removed. A whole way of life was gone forever.
What I learned most about reading this book is the importance of history in our lives. I’ve found over the years, particularly in the Protestant faith, many lack a firm historical foundation in the religion they practice. They just follow the traditions without delving into where these traditions started. After reading about this boy king Edward VI, I realized he made Protestantism what it is today.
