Here’s my first review of a novel. The Fountainhead, written by my favorite philosopher Ayn Rand was published in 1943. I’ve always believed that fiction, good fiction that is, can give lessons on life than non-fiction cannot. I’m currently re-reading the book. The character of Howard Roark is someone who lives his life with integrity, never compromising his standards to anyone. The book details the life of Roark as a professional architect. The individuals who come into Roark’s life want to destroy him. Not only does Roark not let these individuals affect his life, he ends up rising above them in triumph, without being defeated.
This novel gives me spiritual fuel. When I am going through a difficult time in my life, I always ask myself, how would Roark react in this situation? Very few novels have had such an impact as this one. Roark is someone who does not let the opinions of others sway him in any way. An example of this is when Roark submitted his drawings for a commission to build a new bank. The chairman wanted to add a Classic motive to the facade of the building. Roark explained:
why an honest building, like an honest man, had to be of one piece and one faith; what constituted the life source, the idea in any existing thing or creature, and why—if one smallest path committed treason to the idea—-the thing of the creature was dead; and why the good, the high and the noble on earth was only that which kept its integrity. (bold added)
The chairman then tells Roark:
…..There’s no answer to what you’re saying. But unfortunately, in practical life, one can’t always be so flawlessly consistent. There’s always the incalculable human element of emotion. We can’t fight that with cold logic. This discussion is actually superfluous. I can agree with you, but I can’t help you. The matter is closed…….(bold added)
Roark proceeds to decline the commission. After Roark declines the offer, a different chairman, Mr. Weidler tries to explain the gravity of his decision:
Don’t you know how big a commission this is? You’re a young man, you won’t get another chance like this. And… all right, damn it, I’ll say it! You need this! I know how badly you need it! (bold added)
This is my favorite scene in the book. Roark was in fact on his last dime. But that did not matter to him. He refused to compromise his standards just for money. In fact, Roark had to close his business.
This was a 1, 2 punch for me. I had a HUGE smile on my face. Do you know how much courage it took to turn down that offer? I can only think of a handful of people I know who would act as Roark did. This had a profound impact on me. No matter the circumstance no on has any power over you. They can drag you through mud, they can make threats, but they can’t control you. Too bad in our culture, individuals like Roark are rare. I’m glad that a novel like The Fountainhead exists. It gives me a model of how life SHOULD be!
