I wanted to post about Dr. Leonard Peikoff’s latest book after my post on the 2008 financial crisis. I thought it a perfect segue to the consequences of a lack of integration in dealing with the economy. Politics and economics are a consequence of the ideas within a given culture. Peikoff’s theory of DIM uses the foundations of Objectivism to posit three methods of thinking and their impact on Western society.
D-disintegration, I-integration, and M-misintegration are the three methods that explain how cultures prosper or fail. Wide in scope, Peikoff’s book studies literature, education, politics, even physics-to epistemology (how knowledge is acquired) that led to their development in the ancient, medieval, and modern Western world.
According to Peikoff, Western civilization and America in particular is slowly perishing due to the disintegration of the conceptual faculty. Our inability to reason from reality is slowly reverting us back into the Dark Age mentality of irrationalism. When Peikoff focuses on America, he looks at the influence of religion on our intellectual life. I am in complete agreement with Dr. Peikoff when he concludes the possibility of a religious totalitarianism. This could come about due to the leftists cultural nihilism which is embodied in the Obama administration willingness to destroy the foundations of American society.
So many Americans seek guidance and answers to life’s challenges, they naturally look to religion and consequently repudiate secularism. Seeing its manifestation of leftists moral relativism, is it any wonder the more intellectual fall back on religion?
But what are the consequences to using religion, an M2-misintegration as a philosophical framework? Look to the Republican party and the disastrous elections of 2012 where religion was used to justify government encroachment of Americans lives. Look no further than some of the kooky creatures the Republican party continually endorses. I’m thinking of Rick Santorum, Todd Atkins, Richard Murdock and Christine O’Donnell. I’m grateful these fools lost their respective elections.
This book is such a value to me because it highlights the importance of ideas in our lives. So many of us swallow through osmosis the ideas(mostly bad) floating around the culture without thinking what these ideas will do to our own lives. Let’s face facts: the founding principles of the United States and of Western civilization are under attack.
This book can make anyone depressed about the future. But there’s a paragraph that got me thinking that all is not lost. Peikoff states the following:
The high probability of a monstrous evil should not induce paralysis in those who see it coming. It should lead not to the end of action, but to the beginning. It is a paradox, but still a truth: The worse the coming future, the more it should motivate its opponents-the more it should strengthen their passion to defend themselves and their values against the approaching onslaught, even when the odds of their failure are high, so long as there is still a chance of success.
With that I will continue to fight for my values. I recommend this book but with a caveat. This is a highly technical book. I recommend it to those who have knowledge of Objectivism and other schools of philosophic thought. The novice philosophy student should not read this book first. Instead read the following books I’ve compiled for the newbie to philosophy. Please note this list is not exhaustive.
