Most of us know the story of Sir Thomas More, a loyal servant of King Henry VIII, More was executed for his refusal to acknowledge the establishment of the new Church of England. This is the story we all know. But what if there is more to the story. What if the life of More had a more profound impact on the cultural transitions taking place throughout Western Europe. I was prompted to investigate the life of Thomas More after watching an incredible documentary on YouTube called A Renaissance Education about education in Tudor England. This documentary focused on More’s eldest daughter, Margaret. The book I want to introduce you to is called A Daughter’s Love by John Guy.
With this book, you’re able to get an intimate look at More’s life. More kept his family life separate from his professional life. After viewing the documentary I was able to understand More and what his life and death implicitly symbolized.
More was unique in that he expected his daughter’s to be educated in the liberal arts like his son. This was incredibly rare for 16th century England. Women were seen and not heard. And if women were to receive a semblance of an education, they were only taught basic reading of the Bible, writing of the alphabet, and nothing more. This was what patriarchy really looked like. More took a different approach. As the author details, More had his daughters educated by some of the leading scholars of the day. They were taught Rhetoric, Logic, Science/Astronomy, Latin and Greek. Margaret, or Meg, as she was nicknamed, became the intellectual equal to her father.
More lived in a time of massive cultural changes. Here was a man who embodied those changes. At one end More insisted his daughters be educated just like his son. Yet was opposed to Margaret being a published author because it would undermine her “modesty”. We see him as Lord Chancellor, a staunch Catholic upholding papal supremacy, he vigorously persecuted heretics during the Protestant Reformation. Yet, he would be martyred for not submitting to tyrannical Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church.
I hold that More reflected two philosophical schools of thought that were in conflict throughout Western Europe. The first philosophic school was the medieval world of mysticism and tyrannical monarchy. A world steeped in Platonism. The second philosophic school was that of the Renaissance or modern period of free inquiry, acquiring knowledge, and exploration. This was the Aristotelian world. It was a time where the desire to know and to think for oneself was embraced. More was the embodiment of this philosophic clash. Margaret was the only one in the family who would help her father come to terms with his fate. Her courage proved pivotal in keeping his legacy alive. Even going so far as to retrieve his remains and to eventually be buried with them.
I always think of Margaret as being born in the wrong time. She personifies what a properly educated, active mind can do to one’s life and the lives of others. She can definitely be called a Renaissance woman.
